Saudi Arabia has successfully planted over 95 million trees since the launch of the Saudi Green Initiative in 2021 in collaboration with government, private and non-profit partners.

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) revealed that these efforts have helped rehabilitate 111,000 hectares of degraded vegetation cover. Moreover, they protected 4.3 million hectares of land currently undergoing rehabilitation across Saudi Arabia.

121 partners contribute to vegetation regeneration

The center also revealed that Saudi Arabia has so far recorded 7.1 million cases of natural vegetation regeneration, demonstrating significant progress toward increasing the vegetation cover.

So far, 121 public, private, and non-profit sector partners have contributed to planting efforts, reflecting a commitment to achieving national goals. In addition, successful partnerships in the afforestation efforts have supported the targets of the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030.

These efforts contribute to reducing carbon emissions, improving the quality of life, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

NCVC is actively contributing to protecting, monitoring, and rehabilitating vegetation cover. The center is also addressing violations, combating illegal logging, and managing rangelands, forests, and national parks sustainably. These endeavors are essential to fostering a thriving and sustainable vegetation cover for future generations.

Saudi Green Initiative

In 2021, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, launched the Saudi Green Initiative to unite all sustainability efforts in the country and rapidly scale up the Kingdom’s climate action.

The initiative supports Saudi Arabia’s ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2060 through the circular carbon economy approach. In addition, it aims to accelerate the country’s transition to a green economy.

The Saudi Green Initiative has three main targets: emissions reduction, afforestation, and land and sea protection. Since its launch, Saudi Arabia activated 77 initiatives corresponding to the three targets, representing an investment of over $186 billion.
