The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has recently announced the launch of the first phase of Riyadh’s main and ring road development program. Phase one includes the awarding of four major projects with a total budget exceeding SAR13 billion ($3.46 billion). The RCRC also announced that it will unveil contracts for the subsequent phases of the program soon.

Riyadh’s main and ring road development program aims to enhance the city’s transportation network and strengthen connectivity across its various regions. Moreover, it aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, positioning Riyadh as a leading global metropolis and a central hub for sustainable transportation and logistics in the Middle East.

Greater connectivity

Riyadh’s RCRC announced that the first contract is for the construction of the Second Southern Ring Road. This road is a 56-kilometer stretch that extends from the new Al-Kharj Road in the east to Jeddah Road in the west. The project will feature four lanes for the main road in each direction, three service road lanes in each direction, 10 main intersections, and 32 bridges.

The second contract went to the construction of two parallel bridges alongside the existing Wadi Laban suspension bridge. The project also includes the development of a 4-kilometer stretch of the Western Ring Road at its intersection with Jeddah Road. Moreover, it includes the construction of four additional bridges at the Western Ring Road and Jeddah Road junction.

Riyadh’s commission also revealed that the third contract involves the development of the western section of the Thumama Road Axis, a 6-kilometer stretch extending from King Khalid Road in the west to King Fahd Road in the east.

Meanwhile, the fourth contract went to the extension project of Taif Road from the Laban neighborhood to Qiddiya, covering 16 kilometers from the western end of Taif Road in Laban to the Qiddiya project.

The RCRC also announced that it has developed a traffic diversion management plan in collaboration with relevant city agencies and stakeholders to ensure smooth traffic flow on roads impacted by these projects.

Enhancing over 500 km of Riyadh’s roads

Launched in 2019, the Ring Roads Axes Development Program covers over 500 kilometers of road enhancements in the city of Riyadh. This program includes the construction of new roads, upgrades to existing main roads, and greater connectivity throughout the city.

The program will bring substantial benefits to Riyadh, its residents, and visitors. It aims to accommodate the city’s rapid population growth, support large-scale development projects, and address current and future transportation needs.

The program’s key advantages include better traffic flow, higher average driving speeds, less travel times, and greater access to major urban developments. In addition, it seeks to improve the quality of life, bolster Riyadh’s economic, urban, environmental, cultural, and tourism sectors, and enhance its competitiveness as a global business and investment hub.
