NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) and the Energy & Water Academy (EWA) recently announced a strategic collaboration to deliver a vocational training program that equips Saudi nationals with the skills and experience they need to support the operation, maintenance and optimization of the green hydrogen plant and excel in the rapidly growing green hydrogen sector. This is the first green hydrogen training program of its kind available in Saudi Arabia.

“Investing in education and training is crucial for the success of NEOM Green Hydrogen Company as we start preparing to operate the renewable energy facilities and the green hydrogen production plant,” stated Wesam Y. Alghamdi, CEO of NEOM Green Hydrogen Company.

Alghamdi also noted that this program will empower a new generation of skilled professionals to lead this industry’s growth.

Full operation to begin by the end of 2026

NEOM Green Hydrogen Company is set to become the world’s largest green hydrogen producer. Full operations will likely begin by the end of 2026. As a first mover in this industry, the company is investing significantly in the training and upskilling of its workforce. This ensures that they have the necessary skills, knowledge and on-site experience to lead this ground-breaking project.

Program offerings

The comprehensive training program, supported by the Saudi Human Resources Development Fund, commenced in August at EWA in Rabigh. The program tailors to aspiring male and female technicians and engineers. It also offers a unique opportunity to gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience on-site in renewable energy technology and green hydrogen production.

The program will offer:

  • Two-year technician training program in renewable energy technology & green hydrogen: This program targets recent graduates of Industrial Technical Colleges with Diploma Certificates or a Bachelor’s Degree in Science. It provides specialized training in renewable energy technology and green hydrogen.
  • One-year engineers training program: This program is for individuals holding a Bachelor’s degree in engineering. It also provides specialized training in renewable energy technologies.

“This program goes beyond traditional training, providing hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology and a comprehensive understanding of green hydrogen production,” added Alghamdi.

Global leader in renewable energy

The partnership between the company and EWA aligns both organizations’ goals with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objective of becoming a global leader in renewable energy and sustainable development. Saudi Arabia also seeks to become a leading producer of clean hydrogen by 2030.

“Our mission at EWA is to cultivate a generation of innovators and leaders equipped to drive Saudi Arabia’s vision for a sustainable future,” stated Tariq Al Shamrani, CEO of the Energy & Water Academy.

The partnership with NEOM Green Hydrogen Company reflects EWA’s dedication to advancing education that not only meets but exceeds industry demands. This ensures that trainees are at the forefront of the global energy transition. The program also serves as a model for industry-academic collaboration in tackling the challenges of climate change and building a more sustainable future. Aspiring technicians and engineers can now explore these unique training opportunities. Moreover, they can join the movement toward Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification and clean energy goals.
