Saudi is a smart cities‘ pioneer to become one of the first markets in the world to adopt self-driving electric shuttles for the transportation of people, together with electric tow tractors to move goods at airports.
In light of the above, Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) expected that autonomous vehicles (AVs) will be available for everyone by 2050.
“AVs are among the most advanced technologies in developed countries,” SDAIA said. AVs are expected to be safe and reliable by 2025 as they can drive themselves from a starting point to a predetermined destination in ‘autopilot’ mode using various in-vehicle technologies and sensors, SDAIA said on its official Twitter account.
The deployment of AVs depends on countries’ readiness in terms of laws and legislation, as well as infrastructure. By 2030, AVs will be available for commercial use across several regions.
In March, French AV maker company Navya signed a deal with Saudi’s Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services to support the implementation of autonomous vehicles in Saudi.
The projects relate to the deployment of self-driving electric and shared shuttles for the transportation of people, together with the deployment of electric tow tractors for the transportation of goods at airports and industrial sites.
