The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) and the National Transformation Program (NTP) announced the launch of the first National Data Index (NDI). They also launched the updated version of the open data platform and the data governance platform.

This step aims to achieve the objectives of NTP, one of Saudi Vision 2030 strategy’s programs. It seeks to enhance transparency, create a national economy based on data, and contribute to assessing data maturity in government agencies. It also seeks to strengthen the kingdom’s efforts in supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

Saudi Data Forum

The three launches are scheduled to take place during the Saudi Data Forum, organized by SDAIA and NTP, next Monday. The forum will host a number of Their Excellencies and senior data officials from government agencies. Moreover, major local and international institutions and companies will also attend. The event is being organized in light of the constantly increasing interest in data as the driver of the innovation and future developments.

Importance of open data

Open data is increasingly gaining importance internationally and many companies and products have emerged due to the use of data. Open data is utilized both in the public and private sectors and can achieve great financial gains. For example, the European Commission, through its Open Data Strategy, estimates the economic value of open data at about 40 billion euros annually in Europe.

Discussion sessions

SDAIA and NTP are keen, through the forum, to highlight the importance of open data by holding a number of sessions that will host elite local and international elite data specialists to share the latest trends in open data.

The sessions include:

  • Introduction to open data
  • Benefiting from open data in the kingdom’s main sectors
  • Open Data, social impact, and community participation
  • Cooperation and partnerships in the field of open data

Forum objectives

The forum aims to raise awareness about open data and its impact on business sectors in the kingdom. It seeks to increase trust in open data and motivate individuals to share their personal data with authorities when needed. In addition, it highlights the promising opportunities resulting from the use of open data in developing solutions and applications. It aims to enhance the concept of using data and highlight topics related to AI and the role of innovation through the launch of the National Data Index.

Memorandum of understanding between SDAIA and NTP

Notably, SDAIA and NTP signed a memorandum of understanding in January 2022 to discuss cooperation between the two parties. It aims to launch new strategic partnerships and smart business solutions that support the strategic objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. In addition, it involves SDAIA in developing qualitative digital initiatives related to data and AI. That is to achieve the goals of NTP and enable digital transformation in the kingdom.
